Module 1: Introduction to Subtraction
π What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away or finding the difference between two numbers.
It helps us know how many are left after removing some.π’ Example:
If you have 5 apples and you eat 2 apples,
How many are left?
π 5 β 2 = 3 applesβ Subtraction Symbol
We use the minus sign ( β ) for subtraction.
We also use the equal sign ( = ) to show the answer.β¨ Real-Life Examples:
You had βΉ10, spent βΉ4 β βΉ10 β βΉ4 = βΉ6There are 8 balloons, 3 burst β 8 β 3 = 5 balloons leftYou see 6 birds, 2 fly away β 6 β 2 = 4 birds leftπ§ Why Learn Subtraction?
To solve daily problemsTo handle moneyTo prepare for advanced math

Matching and Mismatching Numbers in Subtraction
β
Matching Numbers
When both digits in the same place are the same, subtraction is easy.π’ Example:
44 β 22
Each digit matches:
4 β 2 = 2 and 4 β 2 = 2
So, 44 β 22 = 22β Mismatching Numbers
When digits are different, especially when the top digit is smaller, we may need borrowing.π‘ Example:
42 β 27
2 (ones) is smaller than 7 β So we borrow from the tens.
Now do:
12 β 7 = 5
3 β 2 = 1
So, 42 β 27 = 15π‘ Why It Matters:
Matching numbers help build speed and confidence.Mismatching numbers teach us about borrowing and place value.Understanding the difference helps children learn when to borrow and when not to.

Easy Method of Subtraction Examples
β
1. Line Up the Numbers
Always write numbers one below the other, keeping ones, tens, hundreds in the right place.π’ Example:markdown
Copy
Edit
73
β 25
____
β
2. Start from the Right (Ones Place)
Subtract the ones column first, then the tens.π’ Example:
3 β 5 β β Canβt do
π Borrow 1 from the 7 β 3 becomes 13, and 7 becomes 6
Now:13 β 5 = 86 β 2 = 4
β
Answer: 48β
3. Use This Rhyme to Remember Borrowing:
β¨ "More on the floor? Go next door! Borrow 10 and try once more!"β
4. Cross-Check with Addition
After subtracting, you can add your answer to the smaller number to check.π’ Example:
48 + 25 = 73 β
(Correct!)β¨ Quick Tricks for Small Numbers:
β Subtract from 10 Easily:
10 β 3 = 710 β 6 = 4Use your fingers if needed!π’ Subtracting in Parts (Break the Number):
45 β 28 =
First do 45 β 20 = 25
Then 25 β 8 = 17
